That first gif is a perfect representation of how I beat my meat.

yeah it’s the inside of a roots blower. on a Rootes engine.

The engineers at Napier must have had a massive pot of extra strength crazy brewing every day. Seriously, what rational person comes up with stuff like the Deltic and Nomad?

Probably not the simplest solution to the problem, but you can’t say they took a boring approach.

Funny, I was thinking the Deltic animation looked like some kinda weird mechanical orgy.

So, not far off then.

The military is developing next gen opposed diesels, supposed to be really efficient.

the first animation is of a Commer TS3 opposed-piston 3 cylinder engine. it was functionally a two-stroke diesel, and trucks using it were “affectionately” referred to as “Commer Knockers.”

Now, who can spot the mistake in both the Knocker and the Deltic gifs?

I want to see the valvetrain on the second one - I refuse to accept it as a 2-stroke.

Something looks off on the gears on the Deltic. It looks like there is an extra gear between the bottom crank and the main crank that isn’t moving. There should only be one gear between the bottom and main crank since you want to reverse the direction of rotation.

As for the Knocker I’m not positive, but seems like the exhaust ports should stay open slightly later than the intake ports.

The Deltic has an extra gear because one of the cranks (the one with the extra gear) counter rotates. Napier couldn’t make it work properly until they were told that this was the secret.

What I was thinking of though was that in each case the pistons are shown moving in sync whereas in reality they don’t. Look at this other deltic gif which is correct. As I recall the cranks are 20deg of rotation apart.

Yeah, I knew the Deltic needed an extra gear for one of the cranks. My first glance at the gif made me think there was an extra extra gear, but upon closer inspection that isn’t the case.

Stepping through the Deltic gif you posted it looks like the exhaust ports close before the intake port. Based on that I’m giving myself a little bit of credit for pointing out that the port timing is off on the Knocker gif.
